As the quarter progresses, we will use this space to discuss the various examples of public writing on our course topic we might find in other blogs; as explained in class, this is a low-stakes environment where you are asked to both analyze and discuss the writings that are assigned to you by your peers each week.
Until then, though, feel free to comment below and become more accustomed to the class blog. I would also recommend "following" this blog (look at the sidebar to the right) so that you are alerted when your classmates make their weekly posts.

ReplyDeleteThe article, "Gay Students Get Death Threats," I found to be extremely discouraging. Though we all have probably witnessed some of the events that are described in the article, (hopefully mostly only the name calling) the other events described seem absolutely horrifying and out of line. The one student explained that even when activity between two students occurs in front of a teacher, the teacher does not intervene. Isn't there something wrong with this picture? Everyone in this world has the right to be who they are. Nobody should be afraid to express their sexual orientation. The statistics given at the beginning of the article I found to be astounding. "Over two thirds of lesbian and gay pupils have been victimised by homophobic bullying, with abuse ranging from verbal abuse to violence to death threats at the hands of students and staff alike. Of those, 92 per cent (143,000) have experienced verbal bullying, 41 per cent (64,000) physical bullying and 17 per cent (26,000) death threats." I never realized that there were so many problems with bullying kids who are gay or lesbian. Students producing physical harm to other students due to them being gay or lesbian, and even more so pronouncing death threats is unbelievable. All I can think of is "How would I feel if I was one of these students being bullied? Would you like to be given death threats while at school, or be so physically harmed that you have to be reported to the hospital all because you're gay or lesbian?
